Well that was unexpected. I’ve completely fallen off the grid as far as blogging goes. Not entirely a surprise, it’s been quite a year so far. But sometimes these quick monthly summaries are useful for helping me remember the best and, sometimes, the hardest bits.

Thanks to Kendra Adachi and her Summer Playbook and Summer Docket I’m trying to get a handle on the busy season ahead.

Loved

It may seem like something small, but I love having my bird feeders back up! We had to take them down before the big home addition project back in the fall of 2023 and finally got them back up today.
I’m hoping to add to our little set up so we can get as many different kinds of birds as possible.

Learned

I’m learning this little lesson in both my personal life and my work life. Take notes right after an event, don’t wait until the beginning of the next one.

Let me explain. Especially at work, because my job works around the school year, we tend to finish out the year and everyone give a deep sigh of relief. But I’m learning that my brain is primer to notice what can be done better immediately after. So if we want to make changes to procedures and events for next year, the best time to do assess those is right away.

Now, if it doesn’t make sense logistically or financially, I’ve developing the habit of taking notes on my thoughts and setting a calendar reminder to revisit the conversation at a more opportune time. (Such as before setting next year’s budget or during the early stages of planning the next event).

In my personal life, this looks like making notes on things we say no to, but would like to say yes to next time. (A poorly timed playdate or dinner invitation or a seasonal purchase.)

Went Well

May is always busy. It’s an almost universal truth, especially here in the U.S. But this year it felt different. It was busy but I didn’t feel quite as frantic. I don’t know if this is because some of the health protocols I’ve been following have actually begun to work or if it was a mental change but it definitely felt better somehow.

Let Go

Time seems to be passing so quickly lately. I guess it’s just one of the features of being at this age and phase in life. But one of the upsides I’ve discovered is that it makes it easier for me to let things go in some areas.

For example, I had some pretty big goals for my garden this year and it’s all taken longer than expected. I’m quickly running out of time based on the weather and how many big things we have coming up.

I’ve decided to do what I must do this year (based on plants already purchased or things that needed to be transplanted) and then delay other things until next year. Because I know that next year will be here before I know it.

While, yes, sometimes I have the a feeling of running out of time, I’m also feeling more able to delay certain things because I know that life is busy and the waiting won’t be as bad as I think.

June is going to be the second of our big family birthdays this year, and the fun is likely to be spread throughout the summer. There is a lot to plan and to accomplish and I’m hoping what we do will be enough to help the special people in my life feel loved.
